Hormones such as Insulin, Glucagon, and Cortisol, when unbalanced, can cause unwanted weight gain especially around the gut!

Insulin is responsible for taking up glucose from the bloodstream and storing it in the muscles and as fat.

Glucagon is a fat-burning hormone secreted with the consumption of protein, working to the opposite of insulin.

Cortisol is the stress hormone released when anxiety is high and is useful to the body in the short term, however detrimental to health when constantly high.

Here are some tips to achieve hormonal balance and promote weight loss:

1. Reduce the consumption of insulin stimulating foods
These include sugar and processed foods; excess alcohol and all processed flours.

2. Consume glucagon stimulating foods at every meal
Glucagon stimulating foods include proteins such as: chicken, fish, lean red beef, eggs, yogurt and whey protein powder

3. Support your hormonal health with essential fatty acids
In addition to cold-water fish such as salmon include a variety of raw nuts and seeds in your diet. You should also consider a good quality Omega 3 Supplement.

4. Stay hydrated
Form a habit of drinking a minimum of 2 liters of water per day which is important for energy and vitality

5. Drink green tea
In addition to boosting metabolism, green tea secretes an amino acid called L-theanine which tends to have a calming effect on one’s mood

6. Exercise
Exercise is one of the most effective ways to lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels.

7. Sleep well
A good night’s sleep can do wonders for proper cortisol secretion and weight loss. Poor sleep quality can be linked to a general increase in food cravings and hunger leading to weight gain.

8. Take time for you
Whatever it is that you love to do, try to take 15-30 minutes per day for yourself. You are worth the investment in your own health!
